International Conference on Industrial Policy

We are pleased to invite you to our international conference on industrial policy, “Advancing Industrial Policy in the Era of Strategic Competition”.  The conference aims to explain the imperatives and consequences of various state capitalism, the emergence of economic globalisation and extra-territory industrial policies, as well as the hard and soft power dynamics among engaging countries.

Given the prevalence of industrial policies being discussed, and implemented in a changing context, whilst being influenced by new geopolitics and economic globalisation, we hope this conference will bring together international academics and practitioners, whose expertise and interests on industrial policies reveal either sectoral perspectives, such as energy, electric vehicles, semiconductors, etc., or some specific geographical perspectives of industrial policies.

The conference consists of four types of activities:

1. Two keynote lectures
   • Antonio Andreoni & Prof. Ha-Joon Chang, SOAS University of London, UK,
   • Patarapong Intarakumnerd, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Japan, where concepts of industrial policies, innovation policies, and cases of how they are implemented will be elaborated.

2. A roundtable discussion, where questions such as characteristics of industrial policies, and differences between those implemented in advanced countries and developing countries, or those implemented in different sectors, and lessons which can be drawn, will be discussed.
3. Seven panel discussions, where individual papers on 7 different themes will be highlighted and discussed.
4. The launch of special issue “Designing and Negotiating Industrial Policy: Prospects and Challenges for State-led Development in the 21st Century” on Third World Quarterly.
