Beijing, September 7, 2023 — A high-level academic workshop titled “Rare Earth Industry Development and Industrial Policy in the Context of Great Power Competition and Global Supply Chain Restructuring” was successfully held on September 7, 2023. The event was jointly organized by the ERC Starting Grant research programme Green Industrial Policy in the Age of Rare Metals (GRIP-ARM) and the Center for Industrial Development and Environmental Governance (CIDEG), Tsinghua University.
The workshop brought together leading scholars from prominent Chinese universities and experts from the China Rare Earth Society, fostering a vibrant exchange on the strategic future of rare earth elements and critical metals.
Discussions centered on two main themes: the global supply-demand dynamics and innovative applications of rare earths, and the development trajectories of rare earth and critical metal industries. Drawing on perspectives from global supply chains, international trade, cross-national comparisons, and industrial futures, participants examined how the evolving global landscape—marked by the rise of high-end manufacturing and energy transition—is reshaping industrial policies and the structure of key raw material industries.
In the open discussion segment, experts delved into potential pathways for international collaboration in high-value industries under conditions of uncertainty, and reflected on strategic responses for China in navigating these emerging global challenges.
